Cocktail: Elderflower and Cucumber Martini

Price: R65

Ingredients: 5cm of cucumber, half a tot of fresh lime juice, 2 shots of Hendrick’s gin and half a shot of elderflower syrup

Put on your best bowtie and head over to the old school Alexander Bar on Strand Street for this shaken martini.

It’s made with Hendrick’s gin, which includes rose petals and cucumber.

It’s not as sweet as I expected and the flavour of cucumber and rose comes through nicely.

Alexander Bar is a delightful discovery and now a must on my pub-crawling list.

Each table has a vintage rotary dial telephone to call the bar, other tables or listen to the BBC World Service.

Or you can use the telegram service. By SMSing “Telegram” and a message to 34010, your order prints out at the bar.

It’s a case of old meets new as computer programmers and owners Nicholas Spagnoletti and Edward van Kuik designed the fun.

They have been open since December.

The bar gets its name, not from Alexander Graham Bell, the inventor of the telephone, but from the fact that both owners have “Alexander” as their middle name.

They have free, no-code Wi-Fi, and a smoking area outside.

They are open from 11am to 1am Mondays to Saturdays. Food is served until midnight. - Weekend Argus
