Cocktail: The Red Stiletto

Price: R45

Ingredients: Raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, fresh limes, rum and a touch of soda.

Carina Richmond, general manager of Jackal and Hide, makes the drink by muddling berries, then adding fresh limes, rum, blackberry syrup and tops it off with crushed ice and a mix of berries. The drink is served tall.

I liked the natural juicy flavours that masked the taste of the alcohol well. If you drink it quickly, use a spoon to scoop up the berries left in the glass.

The summery drink is popular with patrons, said Richmond.

The bar’s decor has a Victorian look without being too stiff. There’s a large, smoking-friendly deck that overlooks Kloof Street, which is ideal for sundowners.

Jackal and Hide is open for lunch (noon to 5pm) Tuesday to Saturday and supper (5pm to 10pm) Monday to Saturday (5pm to 10pm). Drinks are served until late.

Their happy three hours are from 4pm to 7pm with a two-for-one special on classic cocktails. The cocktail of the day, a random cocktail Richmond makes, is special for R28. There is also a food special on Mondays where you can get two selected mains for R140. – Weekend Argus
