Cocktail: Oor die Klippe

Price: R35

Ingredients: Espresso, Klipdrift brandy, Kahlua liqueur and ice cream

The saying goes “stadig oor die klippe”, a cautionary instruction often given to me by an editor or two on my approach to alcohol.

Fortunately, as this alcoholic milkshake is a thick one, it has to be sipped slowly.

Bar manager Brandon Ngwenya makes the concoction by blending the ingredients together until the mix is smooth. This is poured into a poco grande glass and garnished with whipped cream and coffee beans.

I was a bit afraid of too much cream but it turned out not to be too heavy a drink. Sip it slowly and have some water on the side if you are wary of rich drinks.

The drink is new to the menu and was designed by Ngwenya, who adapted it from a patron’s request.

The addition of espresso and Kahlua brought different flavours.

Characters is open from 7.30am to 2am Mondays to Saturdays and from 8am to 4pm on Sundays. Happy hour is Wednesdays to Saturdays from 5 to 6pm. The special applies to selected beers, ciders, wines and shooters. – Weekend Argus
