Bar: The Sidewalk Cafe

Address: 33 Derry Street, Cape Town

Contact: 021 461 2839

Cocktail: Singapore Sling

Price: R45

Ingredients: Gin, Triple Sec, cherry liqueur, orange juice, a dash of brandy and soda water.

It’s a red drink but a good dash of brandy picks it up.

Sidewalk Cafe barman Downey Duncalo builds the drink in a glass and garnishes it with a cherry and orange peel.

At first, I tasted a lot of orange juice. It is a pretty, easy-to-drink cocktail. The ice is not crushed so it flows easily. As it is a layered drink, I did not notice a strong taste of alcohol.

Duncalo says the Singapore Sling is often enjoyed by young locals as a sundowner. The Sidewalk Cafe is a Madame Zingara destination perched on the hills of Vredehoek. It was previously a bar known as The Sidewalk.

It has a cosy, beach house atmosphere. The decor includes hanging dried flowers and kitchen utensils.

From its lofty height, you can take in sweeping views of Cape Town Stadium and Table Bay.

It is open Monday to Saturday from 8am to 10.30pm and Sundays from 9am to 2pm.

There is a two-for-one happy hour cocktail special from 3pm to 6pm from Monday to Saturday. – Weekend Argus
