Cocktail: Watermelon martini

Price: R25

Ingredients: Vodka, strawberry liqueur, fresh lime and fresh watermelon.

If you are looking for a cut of fruit with your sundowners, try Characters on the corner of Roeland and Buitenkant.

Bar manager Brandon Ngwenya says he muddles cut watermelon and shakes it together with fresh lime. He adds ice and then the spirits and shakes it. This is then strained into a martini glass and garnished with a slice of lemon.

It is a strong pink drink, with a juicy texture. I could also taste the fresh watermelon.

Ngwenya says the martini is a popular choice on hot days.

Characters is a quieter, cosier bar compared to other watering holes in the area. It has relaxing couches and a jukebox. The soundtrack of the bar is very much contemporary pop.

You can also play a game of pool while there.

Free wi-fi is available.

Characters is open from 7.30am to 2am, Mondays to Saturdays, and from 8am to 4pm on Sundays.

Happy hour is Wednesday to Saturday, 5pm to 6pm.The special applies to selected beers, ciders, wines and shooters. – Wendyl Martin
