A toast to KWV for taking top honours at the 2012 Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show.

They won awards for top producer, best chardonnay, best white wine and best museum-class fortified wine along with a clutch of silver and bronze awards. Hot on their heels was Eikendal (best red wine, best Bordeaux-style red blend, and gold for chardonnay). Jordan scooped trophies for the best cab, and best chenin blanc in the museum class.

Other notable wins were scored by Vergelegen for their sauvignon blanc/semillon blends and Thelema for best white blend (their 2009 Sutherland Viognier Roussanne), while the Discovery of the Show award went to The Secret Cellar sauvignon blanc 2011, a value-for-money in-house brand produced for Ultra Liquors.

Michael Fridjhon chaired the judging panel, which comprised three international and six local judges. More than 1 000 wines were entered and were tasted blind in 40 categories.

The winners – all 218 of them – will be presented for tasting at the one-night Trophy Wine Show tasting in the city’s Convention Centre on Friday from 5 to 8.30pm.

Entrance is R120 and tickets include glass, tastings and a copy of ICONS, the show’s review of successful wines. For more information, visit www.trophywine-show.co.za or call 011 482 5936. The wines can be ordered at special prices. - Weekend Argus
