London - Whatever happened to a simple glass of tap water?

Look in the chiller cabinet in your local supermarket and you’ll find that it’s awash with trendy alternatives to H2O.

This week saw the arrival of Pure Drop by Evian, billed as a stylish way to stay hydrated on the go. But at £1.88 (about R40) a litre, it’s more expensive than petrol. And just when you’d finally got to grips with these healthy drinks, another “must-have” appears.

Hydrogen water is a non-fizzy, tasteless drink consisting of water with hydrogen dissolved into it.

And it costs even more than Pure Drop- it is claimed that research has shown that a daily dose can boost metabolism, suppress eczema and even protect against degenerative diseases including dementia, Parkinson’s and erectile dysfunction.

Roddy MacDonald, founder of Water for Health, says: “Hydrogen has powerful antioxidant qualities — helping remove damaging free radicals from the body.”

Free radicals occur when atoms in a molecule become separated. They are said to be the cause of many degenerative diseases and the ageing process.

But dietitian Nichola Whitehead isn’t convinced hydrogen water is the answer. “No large studies have been carried out to back up the pilot studies,” she says. ‘There’s no concrete proof that it works.

“Research shows that keeping hydrated with tap water can improve physical performance, energy levels and brain function.”

It seems the real super water is right under our noses — just turn on the tap.
