The decanter that keeps your wine fresh

London - It’s a problem that even the French haven’t managed to solve: How do you stop leftover wine from going off?

Now two British brothers have beaten them to it. Maurice and Tom Gonsalves have invented a decanter that they claim keeps plonk fresh for three weeks.

Wine goes off quickly after a bottle is opened because stoppers trap air inside causing the wine to oxidise and change flavour. The Gonsalves brothers say their “wine squirrel” has an advantage thanks to its patented airtight seal.

The gadget is a crystal decanter that works like a cafetiere. Users fill it up, insert the seal and push it down until it sits on top of the liquid. A knob on the top of the seal is then turned to make it airtight.

Maurice, 57, from London, said: “With the ability to hold up to one bottle of wine, it makes drinking one glass and hoping the rest stays fresh a thing of the past.”

The Wine Squirrel can be pre-ordered for £31 (about R650) but will sell for £60 when it hits the shelves in November.
