Durban - When liquor director, Jonathan Koff, told a Scottish distiller he wanted “something different” for Christmas, he was assured there was a bottle that “would blow South Africa’s socks off”.

The 750ml whisky inside the decanter is said to leave “you speechless”.

And so will the R2-million price tag!

Now the whisky, advertised by Makro in its festive season liquor catalogue for the first time at the weekend, is the talk of the town… and the country.

Rarest

The whisky – Royal Salute – is considered one of the rarest and most sumptuous as it has been 45 years in the making, while the bottle is bejewelled, boasting a host of black and white diamonds.

Only 21 have been released worldwide, including the decanter now being made available to a South African customer, who is probably going to be an avid and wealthy whisky collector.

It will come with a 50ml bottle, so that the buyer can get a taste of the “gloriously smooth and formidably powerful” whisky.

It will only be sent to South Africa when it has been paid for. The precious cargo will be flown to the country with a security guard (maybe that should be bottle-guard).

Koff said Makro also had a range of whiskies for everyone “from R130 a bottle right up to R2m”.

Other Christmas offerings include a bottle of 50-year-old single malt whisky at a price tag of R539 999, another for R409 999, and a bottle of cognac for R299 999.

Makro sold a bottle of single malt whisky last Christmas for R299 000, Koff said.
