London - You can get a degree in almost anything these days... and now Pizza Hut wants a slice of the action.

The restaurant chain is launching an apprenticeship programme in partnership with Manchester Metropolitan University, training candidates to degree level in a range of skills, from food production to financial analysis.

The American chain, which has more than 700 branches in the UK, will run the scheme here over the next five years, taking on a total of 1 500 apprentices.

Kathryn Austin, HR and marketing director for Pizza Hut UK, said it will combine academic and practical teaching “to equip [candidates] with skills for life, not just for working in a restaurant”.

Skills minister Nick Boles said: “Apprenticeships add value to our businesses and workforce right across the economy ... I would encourage more businesses to take the lead from companies like Pizza Hut Restaurants to start or expand their apprenticeship programmes.”
