It’s no wonder Daniel Jardim credits his love of cooking to his parents – his mother is well-known Portuguese cook Mimi Jardim.

Daniel, who is a vegetarian, spent a few years in London exploring his love for Asian and Indian cooking and being trained by various chefs.

On his return to South Africa, Daniel started teaching what he had learnt.

In 2007 he joined the Buddhist retreat in Ixopo KZN, where he was involved in writing The Cake The Buddha Ate

In this his latest book, Daniel cooks through the seasons. He believes seasonally available foods support the needs of our bodies at different times of the year.

The Spring chapter has recipes with ingredients like peas, artichokes and strawberries, while the Summer chapter features flowers, watermelons, summer squash and brinjals.

The Autumn chapter is filled with comforting dishes like butternut coleslaw, flat bread and tagines.

The Winter chapter has dishes of steaming noodles, Portuguese kale soup, a veggie shepherd’s pie and a warming boeber pudding.

I liked this book because I didn’t have to visit a fancy health store for ingredients.

Recipes use pantry staples like flour, sugar and spices along with seasonal produce from your greengrocer. You don’t have to follow a vegetarian lifestyle to relish it. - The Star
