London - Ever heard of the medlar fruit (best served rotten), tried cow’s udder with brown bread, or cooled down with an asparagus ice lolly?

Probably not, but they were once the equivalent of today’s burger and fries.

Now Booths supermarket, based in the North of England, is planning to bring back Britain’s forgotten foods.

The chain will stock carp pie, Elizabethan green pudding (a cream and egg soup, with spinach and almonds) and “wiggs” - a type of sweet bun served at funerals during the 17th century.

The supermarket will also be serving up Victorian Nesselrode Pudding - syrup-poached chestnuts mixed with eggs, cream and dried fruit - and Trayne Roste, which is a 15th-century “necklace” of roasted dried fruits and almonds, basted with saffron and ginger and cooked on a spit. It tastes a little like ginger cake. - Daily Mail
