New food labelling laws could mean consumers are given less information about products, it was reported on Thursday.
The Daily Dispatch said labelling legislation was now so strict that it was cheaper for companies not to volunteer a breakdown of nutritional information.
Food scientist Nigel Sunley told the Eastern Cape newspaper that the nutritional aspect of the new food laws had “backfired”.
“The department of health didn’t think carefully about the implications of the wording,” he said.
Dietician Jane Badham said the health minister had spoken about clamping down on the amount of salt in food but it was not mandatory to disclose how much salt was on food.
Any food packaging designed after March 1 will be designed to reflect the new regulations. - Sapa
