Durban - Mauro Castano, star of the American TV show Cake Boss, delighted guests at the launch of the Good Food and Wine Show in Durban by icing dozens of cupcakes at lightning speed and giving them a taste of the goings-on in the bakery where the show is filmed.

And, at the Good Food and Wine Show which opened on Friday, he made two large cakes to celebrate Durban at demonstrations over the weekend: a beach cake, with waves sand and shells, and a rugby cake – even though the Sharks didn’t make it to the Currie Cup final, he said.

Castano said it was his first visit to Durban and the city was nothing like he imagined.

“I thought it would have wild animals and not much else, but it is beautiful,” he said.

He and other visiting chefs had gone to the One&Only in KwaMashu to taste local food, organised by Durban Tourism, and he had visited Ghandi’s home in Phoenix.

Castano is one of several local and international celebrity chefs who were in Durban for the show.

Reza Mahammad, Food Network’s Spice Prince, and Indian celebrity chef Sanjeev Kapoor showed their skills, as well as former MasterChef Australia contestant and SABC foodie Hayden Quinn and Food Network chef Siba Mtongana, who has helped put South African cuisine on the world stage with her show Siba’s Table.
