Of all the charities operating in the winelands, the Pebbles Project is probably the best known and is universally applauded.

From small beginnings, the founders now reach 700 children of wine farm workers in the Western Cape, providing special programmes for those with learning difficulties owing to Foetal Alcohol Syndrome, as well as early childhood development programmes and after-school activities.

Parental workshops are organised along with staff training workshops.

A fund-raising gourmet dinner will be held at Overture restaurant near Stellenbosch on Wednesday, May 30. As both the six-course dinner and the outstanding wines have been donated, every cent of ticket money goes to the cause.

Auction items include a trip on Rovos Rail, a helicopter flight over the winelands, and a dinner party for six, cooked by chef Bertus Basson at the winners’ home.

Basson has dreamed up a feast complemented by the likes of Pol Roger 1998, Trimbach Cuvee Frederick Emile 97, Grivot Vosne Romanee 98 and Mullineux Straw wine 2010. - Weekend Argus
