Cape Town - Size really does matter.
Ask Jannay Saal of Parow, who gobbled up a Whopper on Thursday.
After savouring the moment of her first South African Whopper, Saal said breathlessly. “It’s everything I imagined. The sauce and the patty tastes so good, and it’s big.”
Saal, 19, queued for 13 hours to be one of the first South Africans to get her hands on a Whopper after the first Burger King outlet opened on the Foreshore at noon on Thursday. The first 1000 people in the queue were treated to a free Whopper.
Interviewed in the queue, Saal, a manicurist, said she fell in love with Burger King when she had her first Whopper in Germany last year.
“I’ve been waiting for this moment since then. Their onion rings are amazing and I hope everything they have here tastes exactly the same as the one I had in Germany.”
She and her two friends queued from 11.30pm on Wednesday, spending the night in a car parked next to the store.
“We didn’t sleep much from the excitement.”
The Whopper consists of a sesame seed bun, a flame-grilled beef patty, mayonnaise, lettuce and a tomato slice.
According to Saal it was all she had imagined. And she wasn’t alone – people said they were impressed by the taste and the size.
Mitchells Plain’s Asharaf Kippie, 20, said: “It’s very tasty and was worth the long wait.”
Mayor Patricia de Lille was there to cut the ceremonial ribbon at noon. Other well-known faces at the launch were comedian Marc Lottering, talk show host Felicia Mabuza, members of the band Crazy White Boy, Jack Parow and Jimmy Nevis. The crowd was given free Pepsi, coffee and Milo.
Jaye Sinclair, chief executive of Burger King SA, said Thursday’s turn-out of enthusiastic fans showed that the city’s fast-food lovers were ready for something new.
Other stores are due to open in GrandWest Casino, Tyger Valley and Cavendish Square in the next six months. - Cape Argus
