Cape Town - Ever been so hungry you were ready to eat the bowl too?

Well, now you can thanks to an award-winning South African design called Munch Bowls.

The product has just clinched the top spot at an international food and beverage trade event called SIAL in Shanghai, China.

Munch Bowls was one of two South African innovations that scored a spot in the top 15. The other company, Blue Africa Trading, received praise for the way it had reimagined rooibos boxes as if they were “Chinese take-away boxes”.

Inspired by ice cream cones and a desire for a healthy, environmentally friendly alternative to polystyrene fast food containers, Georgina de Kock created Munch Bowls. They are edible and can hold a variety of dishes – even hot soup for up to two hours – something which proved a challenge to perfect.

Charl Rudman, chief executive of Blue Africa Trading, said:

“My idea came from Chinese (take-away) boxes.” His design includes a hang slot to save space on shelves. Rudman’s tea flavours and unique design will hit Dubai markets first.

MEC for Economic Opportunities Alan Winde said: “Blue Africa Trading and Munch Bowls are excellent brand ambassadors for innovation in the Western Cape’s food sector.”
