London - A flu vaccine patch you apply yourself could mean an end to that annual winter visit to the GP.

The patch consists of 50 microscopic needles, approximately the same length as the thickness of a credit card.

The patch is pressed painlessly on to the forearm, releasing the vaccine, before being removed almost instantly. Researchers say this technology would not only reduce costs and workload for doctors, but might increase the vaccine take-up rate.

The proportion of people who said they’d be vaccinated rose from 46 percent to 65 percent if they could have the patch rather than a traditional jab, according to the researchers at Georgia Institute of Technology in the US The vaccine patch could be available within three to five years. - Daily Mail
