London - Green tea before a jog could stave off Alzheimer’s disease, researchers claim.

And further study of the drink could lead to new treatments for the illness, they said.

US scientists found a green tea extract called ECGC slowed the progress of Alzheimer’s if combined with physical activity.

Todd Schachtman, a professor at the University of Missouri, said: “In Alzheimer’s patients, amyloid-beta peptide [A-beta] can accumulate… causing amyloid plaques in the brain. Symptoms can include increased memory loss and confusion.”

The study, published by the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease, tested mice as they built a nest. Professor Schachtman said: “Mice exhibiting symptoms of the disease had nests that were poorly formed or erratic.” But when they were given ECGC and access to running wheels, their cognitive function improved and brain analysis showed a “decrease in A-beta levels”.

Separate research suggests eating too many sweets, chocolate and cakes may cause Alzheimer’s. The study by Washington University in St Louis, Missouri, found high blood sugar levels in mice rapidly increased their amount of A-beta.
