London - Happy people are more likely to stay physically active as they get older, according to researchers.

Those who enjoy life walk at a faster pace and are fitter in old age than unhappy people. Content pensioners also had less trouble getting out of bed, getting dressed or showering.

Experts at University College London tested and interviewed 3 199 men and women aged 60 or over, examining the link between mental well-being and physical fitness for eight years.

One of the researchers, Dr Andrew Steptoe, said: “The study shows that older people who are happier and enjoy life more show slower declines in physical function as they age.”

He added that the correlation persists even when factors such as wealth and lifestyle are taken into account. - Daily Mail
