London - Catherine Zeta-Jones says she was “a mess” during her husband’s battle with cancer.

The Oscar-winner, 44, was attending a medical conference with her husband, fellow Hollywood heavyweight Michael Douglas, 69, who was diagnosed with tongue cancer in 2010 but given the all-clear the following year.

Speaking to an audience of 3 000 doctors, the actress, who has undergone treatment for bipolar disorder, said: “I’ll be quite frank, I was a mess. I’m married to a man who has such a conviction for life – he fights to make the wrongs right. For the first time, he was fighting for his life.”

The Welsh star of the film Chicago added: “I’m very happy to be here this morning with my husband – I mean that literally.”

The couple, who have two children together, split last year but have reconciled.

Also speaking at last week’s event, Douglas said: “In every sense of the word, I’m very fortunate to be here today... Thank you for saving my life.”
