London - More than seven million British people own a celebrity fitness DVD, but nearly three quarters of them don’t believe following the on-screen exercise regimes will help them lose weight.

Researchers found in a survey that 69 percent of those questioned didn’t believe celebrity DVDs are a sure-fire way to long-term health and fitness.

While a quarter said they bought a DVD believing they would lose as much weight as the celebrity, one in five admitted they were seduced by before-and-after pictures.

Almost a third of women who bought one of the DVDs said they did so simply to make themselves feel better.

One in four buyers complained the DVDs lacked advice from a nutritionist or qualified trainer, while one in five blamed lack of success following the DVDs on the fact that celebrities have more leisure time for working out.

The survey of 1,000 adults, for David Lloyd Leisure, found the DVDs are most popular with 16 to 24-year-olds. More than a third of these favoured discs featuring female stars from the reality series The Only Way Is Essex.

TV presenter Davina McCall was almost as popular at 30 per cent.

Asked what exercise regime they would most like, 31 per cent of those surveyed said they wanted a routine tailored to their own metabolism and body type.
