London - Taking paracetamol when you have the flu maybe a waste of time, scientists have found.

Researchers recorded no significant difference in body temperature between 40 flu sufferers given paracetamol for five days and 40 given dummy pills.

This is despite the NHS suggesting patients take the drug to tackle fevers during a bout of the illness.

Writing in the journal Respirology, Dr Irene Braithwaite said that paracetamol “was neither harmful nor beneficial”.

“We found that it did not significantly reduce temperatures and did not make the participants feel any better,” added the medic, from the Medical Research Institute of New Zealand.

Other experts said this was “just one study”.
