London - A device worn on the leg that teaches patients to walk to the sound of music has been designed for people suffering from Parkinson’s disease.

The condition typically leads to a slow walking gait, smaller steps than normal and difficulty turning.

Parkinson’s is linked to the death of cells that produce dopamine, a brain chemical that helps control movement.

The new device, known as Ambulosono, includes a sensor attached to the patient’s leg. The sensor is connected to a music player.

The device has a number of programs, each addressing a different problem - for example, one plays music only when the patient takes large steps, then stops if small ones are taken.
