London - Office workers are being urged to push away their chairs and stand up to improve their health.
Three extra hours on their feet would typically use up 144 extra calories a day and burn off 8lb (about 3.6kg) of fat a year, according to research.
Experts suggest computer desks could be adjusted to a height suitable for standing.
Exercise scientist John Buckley of Chester University said that standing at work will reduce obesity and improve circulation. He added: “People are sitting down at work, sitting in the car, then sitting down in front of the TV. It isn’t natural.
Humans are designed to stand up and keep moving.”
Dr Buckley said regular changes at work can make long-term improvements.
He went on: “It’s little changes in behaviour ... such as standing at your desk that can add up to make quite a big difference to your health.” - Daily Mail
