Durban - This year’s Sunday Tribune Garden and Leisure Show will again host a horticultural happening infused with a national flavour. Municipalities from every corner of the country will be showcasing their floral contributions and compete for top honours in the prestigious keynote garden competition.

One metropole that is ready to flaunt their floral fantasies with a plant mix of vibrant hues and tones is Cape Town.

“The Sunday Tribune Garden and Leisure Show offers our talented staff the opportunity to get creative and do their thing when it comes to designing a work of plant art,” says David Curran, Cape Town’s City Parks district operations manager.

“Our garden will also give show visitors a glimpse into what our beautiful city is all about. Whether you are an urban junky, a free spirit riding the waves, a hiker enjoying the outdoors or quirky and playful, we invite you to come into our stand, take a moment and be yourself.”

Adding sparkle and hoping to shine in the medal rankings is the municipality of Sol Plaatje, representing the city of Kimberley.

“We are honoured to be part of this leading South African gardening event. It’s a great forum to share knowledge and generate new ideas,” says the municipality’s chief horticulturalist Massimo Mazzoncini.

“In keeping with the character and atmosphere of a semi-arid region, our garden layout will include nature’s hardy yet beautiful water wise and easy to maintain plants.”

Bringing a festive flower flavour to the show, the South African National Biodiversity Institute (Sanbi), which co-ordinates research, monitors and reports on the state of biodiversity in South Africa, will celebrate the birthdays of the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden and the Botanical Society of South Africa.

“Both these grand horticultural organisations turn 100 this year,” says Siphuxolo Ngqasa, marketing and events officer. “We invite the public to share in the historic significance of this occasion when they visit our exhibit.”

Experience an extravaganza of mother nature’s marvels this spring and visit the Sunday Tribune Garden and Leisure Show at the Royal Showgrounds in Pietermaritzburg.

For budding garden enthusiasts and professional landscapers alike, this spectacular pageant of plants will inspire originality and creative flair when it comes to designing the next dream garden.
