Solutions for shady, dry spots

  1. Art in the garden filled with orange gerberas. The hybridised descendants of our indigenous Barberton daisy will brighten up the darkest of shady corners.
  2. Other indigenous plants for planting under trees include the emerald fern, Clivia miniata (pictured here), yellow wild iris (Dietes bicolor) and the cycad Encephalartos villosus.
  3. Plants that grow well in morning sun include the white arum, asparagus fern, begonia (pictured here), foxglove, fuchsia, gardenia and all the indigenous plectranthus species.
  4. Plant bromeliads, tree ferns and peace-in-the-home in a cool, shady nook.
  5. A host of hybrid coleus with bold colours are now grown for shady gardens.
