Interior designer Michelle Markram welcomes us into her "fun house". By Marchelle Abrahams

“When nature becomes central to any interior heartbeat, it takes mediocre to a miraculous.” This is how Michelle Markram describes her home.

The Durban-based interior designer sees herself as an “eccentric artist with a bohemian quirk.” Her home is filled with lush shades of green, welcoming the outside in.

It’s her love for sustainable living that prompted Michelle to welcome us into her home.

Her warm, welcoming demeanour is instantaneously infectious as she describes her home as the “fun house” and the “love house” which is the gathering place for her children, family and friends.

The mother of three started Msquared (MSQ) Interior Design in 2014, and her most passionate project to date is the African Green Revolution where she encourages people to bring the natural world back into their homes.

She’s incorporated this idea in her own living space. “You only need to examine the perfection of a plant or tree to see the miracle of God’s artistry. Nature is no doubt the greatest architect in design and an imagination far beyond our wildest dreams,” she says.

Michelle believes that nature beautifies a space visually while restoring and calming the mind. In terms of her home, she’s taken pride in harmoniously combining old and new “and injecting with gusto the gems of living green”.

Many see their home as a reflection of their personality, and Michelle’s has heaps of it. From the welcoming living area to the great big dinning room table – it’s a home that’s meant for living, packed with heaps of love.

“Waking up in the morning feels like I am living in my very own tree house. I love looking at the tree tops, watching the monkeys play and the birds eating their berry breakfast... It’s heaven!”
