London - Regular exercise is the best way to treat back pain, a major study has concluded.

Stretching, muscle exercises and stamina training tackle lower back pain far better than other treatments, scientists found.

Patients who carried out a range of exercises had a 35 percent reduced risk of lower back complaints over 12 months.

When patients exercised and were also taught the best way to lift heavy items and sit properly, their risk of pain was reduced by 45 percent. Other treatments, such as lumbar support belts and shoe insoles, appeared to have no benefit.

Scientists at the University of Sydney analysed the results of 23 previous studies, publishing their findings in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine.
