London - She’s already admitted that married life isn’t always rosy.

Now, in an especially candid interview, Gwyneth Paltrow has revealed that her ten-year marriage to Chris Martin has gone through ‘terrible times’.

The actress said rock star Martin has a ‘mad scientist’ personality so she doesn’t ‘place demands on him’ in order to keep the peace at home.

Paltrow, 40, said: ‘It’s hard being married. You go through great times, you go through terrible times. We’re the same as any couple.

‘I asked my dad once, “How did you and Mom stay married for 33 years?” And he said, “Well, we never wanted to get divorced at the same time”. And I think that’s what happens.

‘When two people throw in the towel at the same time, then you break up, but if one person’s saying, “come on, we can do this”, you carry on.’

Paltrow went on to insist that she is ‘good friends’ with Martin, 36, who fronts band Coldplay and with whom she has two children, Apple, eight, and Moses, six.

She told Glamour magazine: ‘We laugh, we’re good friends, we like to do the same stuff.

‘I’m a very grounded, homey person and Chris is a very mad scientist, genius songwriter. So I never say “Where are you? You should be home by now”. I never place demands on him because I think he’s a really talented man and he’s putting something good into the world.’

This week, when Paltrow appeared on a US chat show, it was revealed she once advised a friend to be especially loving towards her husband and give in when they rowed.

Last year, Paltrow said the key to a successful marriage is ‘compromise’ and in 2011 confessed: ‘We go through periods that aren’t all rosy.’ - Daily Mail
