London - It is never too late to find love, or so the cliché goes.

But many widowed, divorced or single over-55s would prefer to get a new pet rather than find a partner when they retire, a survey has shown.

Only six percent of single middle-aged people wanted to start another relationship, according to a report from consumer analysts Mintel. Far more – 14 percent – were planning to get a pet when they retire.

The most popular thing people intended to do when they left their job was travel around the world, with 46 percent harbouring globe-trotting ambitions.

A close second by 45 percent said spending more time with their family or partner was their primary aim, followed by 33 percent saying they would get fit and by doing more exercise.

However, a separate report from Barclays found just under a third have no idea when they will be able to retire. A Mintel spokesperson said: “Retirement at 65 is no longer a given, with Brits increasingly expected to work longer into their twilight years.”
