Durban - Their relationship was one of the most popular in Hollywood.

She was the A-List star who is the only black actress to ever win a Best Actress Oscar. He was one of the most popular male models, with contracts with fashion houses like Calvin Klein, Hugo Boss, DKNY, Versace and Tommy Hilfiger.

Gabriel Aubry and Halle Berry met in 2005, on the set of Versace’s spring 2006 campaign. From there, they went public, their daughter Nahla was born in 2008 and two years later they broke up.

And that’s when the drama started.

Gabriel wanted Halle to pay him child support money, even though they had shared custody. The court granted Gabriel his $16 000 a month request, which Halle started paying in June. These monthly payments will remain in effect until Nahla turns 19 or graduates from high school.

The ruling also states that Halle and Gabriel are to split any medical expenses Nahla may incur, and Halle will pay for Nahla’s school tuition. At the time of the ruling, Halle owed Gabriel $115 000 in child support.

Recently things came to a head when Halle asked to rather pay $3 000 (R32 800) a month. Halle claimed that Gabriel had been living off the money meant for Nahla. And then according to TMZ, she then called him a “bum” who must “get a job”.

Gabriel’s last modelling job was on the Barneys Men Spring/Summer 2014 campaign alongside Tim Easton, Tyson Beckford and Iván De Pineda.

Would a woman collecting a lot of child support money from her wealthy ex be called a greedy, lazy bum? Chances are her ex might think that, but society would not frown on it. It’s still seen as strange for women to be the providers in a family.

A study by the Pew Research Center found that mothers are the primary or sole breadwinners in 40 percent of all US households.

That’s just how the world has changed. Gabriel needs to get a job.
