London - Retired ballerina Dame Gillian Lynne can still touch her knee to her nose and nearly do the splits.

Impressed? You should be. She is 88, has two metal hips and a foot held together with metal pins.

Now the former Sadler’s Wells and Royal Ballet dancer, also famous for her work as a choreographer of West End musical Cats, is hoping to get other ‘oldies’ moving as elastically as her with a fitness DVD, Longevity Through Exercise.

She said: “I hate these tapes for fitness because they’re always with girls with this hanging out and that hanging out shouting ‘one, two, three four’. That’s just not a way to get an oldie going.”

Like any good teacher, she follows the regime herself, performing the ten-step, 40-minute routine of stretching exercises every morning in her living room.

She added: “I do my breathing exercises. I get my back going, I get my waist twisting. Then there’s a lot of floor work inspired by Cats. It’s all woven in with the jazz work I do and the classical.” - Daily Mail
