Johannesburg - The father of Banting in South Africa, Professor Tim Noakes, has been debating the WHO warning on processed and red meat on Twitter.

Last week the International Agency for Research on Cancer, an agency of the World Health Organisation (WHO), released research findings relating to processed meat.

The research suggested that consumption of processed meat, including bacon, cold cuts, sausages and hot dogs, increased the risk of developing colorectal cancer as well as pancreatic and prostate cancers.

Noakes replied to a number of tweets on his account this week, including this one from Peter Aldis: “Funniest thing about the meat/cancer news is listening to the people who smoke, don’t exercise, etc, worrying about their meat intake.”

Noakes replied: “Especially when they probably have a 50% lifetime probability of developing T2DM (Type 2 diabetes mellitus). Let’s focus on real problems, WHO.”

BlackLivesMatter asked: “@ProfTimNoakes @Peter_Aldiss how is the #WHO a problem professor”

And Noakes replied: “Greatest threat to our health across the globe is insulin resistance. WHO should make prevention of IR a priority “

He looked at the science of the report, and said: “Lifetime likelihood of avoiding cancer if no “bacon” eaten - 94.4%. If eating bacon drops to 93.4%”
