Stress can affect baby-making

London - Women who juggle trying to start a family with a demanding career are damaging their chances of having a baby, a fertility expert claims.

Zita West said would-be mothers in high-pressure jobs are placing themselves under too much pressure to be able to conceive naturally.

West, who has helped Kate Winslet, Gwyneth Paltrow and the Countess of Wessex achieve their dreams of motherhood, said women should stop trying to have it all.

Job stress, work-life balance, lack of exercise, eating on the go, alcohol, cigarettes and taking over-the-counter medicines could all harm fertility, she said.

West made her comments when she promoted her latest book, Eat Yourself Pregnant. Many women do not realise they need to give their bodies three to four months to prepare for pregnancy, she says, adding that fertility “begins in the gut”.

She recommends they boost their chances of conceiving by eating oily fish, leafy greens and slow-release carbohydrates such as brown rice and plenty of fruit.

They should eat protein in moderation to avoid making the body too acidic – and chew their food properly.

She also suggests taking multivitamins, folic acid and omega 3 supplements. - Daily Mail
