London - Idris Elba has dismissed speculation that he will play James Bond, saying he is too old for all of 007’s antics.

One of the favourites to succeed current Bond Daniel Craig, the 43-year-old said it would be inappropriate for him to be chasing after women like 007 does.

The actor, who has been nominated for a Golden Globe four times, is on 6/1 odds at Paddy Power following years of speculation that he will be the first black actor to land the role.

But appearing on US TV network ABC, Elba said: ‘If it was to happen it would be the will of the [British] nation because there’s not been any talks with the studios... If I’m really honest I think I’m too old for that, running around in cars, ladies, martinis. It sounds terrible.’

Roger Moore became the oldest Bond when, aged 45, he starred in 1973’s Live And Let Die. He has said the next 007 needs to be ‘English-English’.
