She’s normally seen performing on stage before tens of thousands of fans or attending exclusive parties for the rich and famous.

But Taylor Swift had rather more mundane plans yesterday – as she turned up for jury duty.

The 26-year-old singer, who has sold more than 40million albums and has won ten Grammy awards, wore a simple black dress and minimal make-up to blend in at the court in Nashville, Tennessee, where she lives.

But she was, of course, still easily recognisable. The singer happily posed for photos with the other stunned jurors, who posted the images online where they were widely shared. One local posted a picture of the star on Twitter, writing: ‘My mom just casually has jury duty with Taylor SWIFT!!!!!!!’ In the image the singer can be seen with a badge that simply reads ‘juror’.

Miss Swift caused surprise when she did not attend the MTV Video Music Awards in New York on Sunday – but it is now clear this was because the star, who also has homes in LA, Rhode Island and New York, is back in Tennessee.

Last year it was reported the singer was called to be a juror in Nashville but she chose to defer it as she was touring in Australia at the time.

While it is unusual for an American celebrity to do jury service, others have taken their place in the courtroom, including actors Charlie Sheen and Tom Hanks, both in 2013.

In Britain jurors are not allowed to take photos in court or the jury room.
