London - He is set to become a father for the fifth time - so perhaps it’s not surprising that he contemplated making a few cutbacks.

Celebrity chef Jamie Oliver has revealed he was on the verge of having a vasectomy but backed down over his fear of needles and because wife Jools refused to let him go ahead.

The 40-year-old made the disclosure during a chat with TV host Alan Carr, who quizzed him about his thoughts on the new addition to his family and then asked whether he had considered a vasectomy.

Oliver told him: “Yeah but I’m really scared of needles.”

He added that he asked a doctor for advice on the procedure but it was Jools who had the final word, which was “No”.

Oliver added that a friend had recently undergone the “snip” and it had ended so badly it had put him off. “He cried for three weeks,” he said.

Oliver and his wife already have three girls and a boy - Poppy Honey, 14, Daisy Boo, 12, Petal Blossom, six, and Buddy Bear, five - and he said that they had not planned to have another baby, but it just “happened”.

He joked that his family life was already like a scene from a comedy film.

“It is completely nuts,” he told Carr.”It’s like Lampoon’s Vacation every time we go anywhere. Teenagers, little kids and now a pregnant wife.

“It’s amazing. I’m really excited. I love the kids and it keeps me grounded. It’s an amazing thing and I feel very grateful.”

However, Oliver made it clear his wife’s impending birth will be the last. “No more,” he said.

During the interview, which was screened on Britain’s Channel 4, Oliver, who is a staunch campaigner against childhood obesity and has pushed for a sugar tax, was asked if his pronouncements made it difficult for him to go supermarket shopping, especially if he fancied a chocolate bar.

He agreed before adding that chocolate was not one of his vices. “You are so right,” said Oliver. “It’s grief the minute you step foot into that camp, it is really annoying. But I just go shopping like everyone else.

“A glass of whisky, good whisky, and a packet of salt and vinegar Hoola Hoops. That is just me. I am happy.

“You did ask the truth! Has that let you down?”

The Olivers met in 1993 and were married in 2000. Their eldest child, Poppy, was conceived using IVF, and arrived two years later.
