Like a boss!

Lorinda Voges made her mark in the industry when she was appointed as Fashion TV’s National Brand Manager even though she easily could have passed as one of their top models...

Annette de Wet sat down with the PR-powerhouse and owner of 4Elementsmedia to talk about her success, future goals and how to make it in the PR-industry.

You've always had a passion for media running the school magazine at 12 years old, what did you want to become when you were young?

Funny enough, I always wanted to be a mother. Since I can remember all I ever wanted was to have kids and be a mom. So at the age of 30 when that did not happen yet, I decided to start 4Elements Media (4EM). Running your own business is like having a child. You need to be responsible and accountable for something other than yourself, which I guess is still the same than being a parent.

You started your own company 4Elementsmedia in 2011, how did you decide on the name?

It basically came down to jotting down my passions in life, which ultimately got narrowed down to working with media, doing events, enhancing brands and networking, just some of the elements that we cover at 4EM.

What do you consider to be your greatest achievement?

My greatest achievement was when I realized that I have a voice and I have a platform where I can share my journey and make a difference in someone's life. Like Anne Lamott said: "You own everything that happened to you. Tell your stories. If people wanted you to write warmly about them, they should have behaved better".

What do you enjoy most about what you do?

I meet super crazy creative people all the time, whether is is someone doing content creation, event management or performing live on stage in front of thousands of people.

What's your least favourite part about being an entrepreneur?

My least favourite parts of running my own business would be the grunt work - things like general admin work, invoicing etc. I'm so much more the creative and would rather look for more business opportunities that dealing with the real business stuff isn't my favourite.

What mindsets helped make your successful?

I am lucky that I have always been driven, organised and passionate about what I do. Those elements helped me get up on a day when I did not feel like it or to recover from a set back. It takes courage to run your own company, especially on your own, but hard work pays off, which is possibly one of the best feelings in the world.

What advice would you give to young women who want to succeed in the workplace?

The truth is that every element of entrepreneurship and working for yourself has its pros and cons, and you just have to learn how to manage your time and work through your issues. Being your own boss can be scary, but it can also be amazing.
