KATY Perry has claimed that ex-husband Russell Brand put pressure on her to have children – so that he could control her.

The singer, who divorced Brand last year after 14 months of marriage, said yesterday that the comedian had “really wanted” her to become pregnant but she did not feel ready.

And she insisted the 38-year-old’s desire to start a family was not borne out of love for her.

In an interview Miss Perry, now 29, said she was not prepared for the ‘sacrifice” of having a baby, adding: “I’m definitely not there yet, and I can’t plan that far in advance.

“When I decide to have a family, I”ll just want to be mom for a little bit. [Brand] really wanted me to have children and I knew I wasn’t ready – I think it was a way of control. I think it was part of, if I have a kid, then I would have to sacrifice – I’d have to be at home more.

“I really wanted to, but I knew I wasn’t ready for it. It wasn’t like, “Hey, let’s have a kid because we”re in love”.”

Miss Perry and Brand met at an awards ceremony in 2009, and Brand proposed on holiday after a whirlwind three-month relationship. They married ten months later in India.

But it wasn’t long before the cracks began to show – and Brand reportedly told his wife that the relationship was over via text message.

Miss Perry later claimed the split left her feeling suicidal, and unable to get out of bed for weeks. But now, in the interview with Marie Claire magazine, the singer has said she no longer cares about Brand and is tired of discussing their relationship.

“It’s almost like if I kept on talking about it, it would seem like I actually cared about it,” she said. “I don’t.”

Miss Perry has been in an on-off relationship with US singer John Mayer, 36, since the divorce, while Brand is now dating heiress and human rights campaigner Jemima Khan, 39, a former girlfriend of Hugh Grant, and has recently admitted to being in love.

Miss Perry said she felt numb after her marriage broke down and admitted spending two weeks doing nothing but eating junk food and drinking.

She said: “There were two weeks of my life after I found out the truth of my marriage where I was like, “OK. All right. I can’t feel this. This is too intense right now”. I was, like, just eating Flamin” Hot Cheetos and drinking, and that’s it.”

Miss Perry added that her relationship with Mayer suffered until she dealt with “all of my ex-husband stuff”.

“I took a break from my boyfriend, not one that I wanted,” she said. “It was like a splash of cold water to search inward on what was going on with me. That is what led me to this new awakening, this realising, if I don’t do some self-love, I’m not going to be able to keep the love that I want. I still needed to deal with all of my ex-husband stuff. I hadn’t.”

Miss Perry also revealed she has embarked on a course of vitamin therapy, prescribed by a Chinese doctor, to help her bounce back from the break-up and said she is in a better place with the “brilliant” Mayer. - Daily Mail
