London - The next time someone boasts about how green they are, you may be forgiven for being a little sceptical.

Research shows many people lie about their environmental credentials because they want to be seen to do the right thing.

Thirty percent of the 2,000 Britons surveyed admitted they exaggerated how often they took their own bags to the shops while 26 percent claimed to have turned the central heating down.

A quarter said they had pretended to use the bus or a bike before taking their car and 22 percent did not recycle as much as they claim to.

David Thomson, director of policy and public affairs at the Chartered Insurance Institute, said: “While there is widespread understanding of the risk posed by global warming, consumers find it hard to comprehend a solution and so struggle to see the point of doing their bit.

“However, the pressure to be seen to be green means people aren’t willing to be honest about this thought.” - Daily Mail
