London - Women splash out £50 (about R750) every year on perfume they won’t use, a survey suggests.

Over a lifetime, that adds up to more than £3,000, with two-thirds of women saying they splurge on expensive scents they never wear.

There is a remedy though – 61 percent said they happily re-gift scents they don’t like to friends and family.

While nearly three-quarters owned five or fewer bottles of perfume, 8 percent had more than ten, with some saying they spent more than £50 a month on beauty products.

The survey, of around 2,100 British women aged 18 and above, was commissioned by discount website MyVoucherCodes.co.uk.

It found women spent £57 on unused perfume each year on average. Taking into account the adult life-span of a woman in the UK – 64.5 years – this suggests £3,676.50 was wasted on scent over their lifetimes.

Respondents were also asked how much they spent on beauty in total.

Most, at 51 percent, spent £15 to £25 per month, while 16 percent said they spent over £50.
