Durban - There are some things and trends that should never be so popular that they become normal. Things like belfies, suitsies, affairs, and, hell, even wearing sandals with socks. Yet these things happen and we learn to live with them, even though we shouldn’t.

There’s a trend that’s big on Instagram and Tumblr lately. Ladies and gents, we are introducing the most pointless, and not to mention craziest trend right now: dyed armpit hair.

Why it’s a thing, we don’t know. Maybe it’s to be different? Start a conversation? Or is it just so we can change the way we believe things ought to be?

This is not a new trend, however, it has been around for almost a year but has only just gained momentum. An official Instagram page dedicated to this new craze, Lady Pit Hair, was started by Anna Biotics. In an interview with Refinery29, Biotics said she first dyed her underarm hair with friends a year ago.

“We had some bleach and some purple dye, and we just went for it,” she said.

When asked by the online beauty magazine why women were doing this, she said, “Why not? It’s definitely part of an alternative culture that’s doing something different, but most people just do it for fun because they can.”

Lady Gaga had blue armpit hair during her performance at the 2011 Much Music Awards. No one batted an eyelid because it’s Lady Gaga. But now that it’s being done by ‘ordinary’ people, we had to take notice. And it’s not really pretty to look at.

So should you do it? It’s up to you. We personally think it’s more hygienic to shave your armpits, especially in summer. But the standards of beauty are ever changing and maybe the thinking is, why can you have fun with your hair and not with your armpit hair?
