London - Her most famous client has opted to keep her hair short.

And other women would do well to follow the Queen if they wish to defy their years, according to Her Majesty’s hairdresser.

Denise McAdam said opting for a hairstyle that ends near the jawline acts as a facelift and provides bounce to ageing locks, giving women a more alluring air.

Citing Julie Walters, 65, and Dame Judi Dench, 80, as women who look younger than their years thanks to their cropped styles, she said: “It lifts you up and you get a bit more height.

“The other thing is that hair does age, it goes through menopause, it may be coloured but it’s probably white, it’s thinner.

“So there comes a time that it’s right to go short, it’s close to the roots so it’s got more bounce and it’s more youthful. Hair can be more youthful that way.”

McAdam, 56, has worked for the royal family for more than three decades.

She will feature as a judge on BBC2 show Hair, which starts on July 13 and is described as the hairdressing equivalent of The Great British Bake Off.
