Nail glass look cuts its teeth

Durban - The shattered glass nail manicure, or just glass nails as many are calling them, is the latest craze in the beauty world, but thankfully you won’t need any shards of glass from that wine glass you broke last weekend.

This isn’t achieved using actual glass; in fact, pieces of cellophane are used.

They are cut into different shapes and are then glued to your nail to give the illusion of glass.

The brainchild behind the new trend is Eun Kyung Park, a South Korean manicurist.

Anny Naicker, manager and nail technician at The Nail Guru, said that she was excited about the new trend.

“It has only recently come this country and I look forward to seeing how big this trend gets. We think as people start having it done it will catch the attention of other people.

“We think it will start with the teenagers and trendy individuals of South Africa,” she said.

Top five tips for beautiful nails

l Moisturise your hands and nails as often as you can.

l Have regular manicures from a professional.

l Wear gloves if you need to do any washing, dishes, gardening, etc to prevent your hands and nails from drying out.

l Apply cuticle oil daily and massage it in.

l Remove any nail enhancements properly.

How to get the look

Step 1: Start with sanitised hands and nails.

Step 2: Prepare the nail by filing the desired shape, lightly buffing, gently pushing back cuticles and sanitise.

Step 3: Apply base coat to all nails and allow to dry.

Step 4: Apply first coat of colour on all nails except on the accent nail.

Step 5: Apply second coat of colour and allow to dry.

Step 6: Place glitter shard pieces on the accent nail using a tweezer or nail art picker. Place in desired design. The pieces can be placed onto a layer of base coat.

The shattered glass nail art can also be applied on a layer of coloured nail polish if desired.

Step 7: Apply top coat and allow to dry. Quick dry spray can be applied to speed up the drying process.
