Of course I’m a natural blonde, honey!

London - More than half of women have never let their partner see them with their natural hair colour, a survey claims.

Fifty-four percent said they hide their real colour from their husband or boyfriend by constantly dyeing their locks to counter the effects of ageing.

Eight in ten admitted to keeping hair secrets from their partners – 57 percent of women tell fibs about how much they spend at the stylist and 74 percent would secretly pluck grey hairs.

Six in ten would immediately start dyeing their hair when it began greying. Even X Factor judge Cheryl Fernandez-Versini has admitted to finding her first grey hair, which she quickly removed.

“It’s fine, I’ve accepted it. But I plucked it out immediately,” the 32-year-old singer said recently.

The Duchess of Cambridge, 33, has also been pictured with a few strands of grey hair, though in other pictures her hair is grey-free.

The survey of 1 000 people for the Crown Clinic hair transplant centre in Manchester reveals that the big cover-up extends to men, too,

Half would secretly pluck grey hairs while a third said they would be prepared to disguise their baldness by shaving their head or changing their hairstyle. The average man starts going grey at 30, while for women it is 35.

David Beckham, who turned 40 in May, seems to have dyed his beard to retain his youthful looks. The former footballer was pictured recently with grey flecks in his beard which had mysteriously disappeared a few days later.

Hair transplant surgeon Asim Shahmalak from Crown Clinic said that for celebrities, good hair is their livelihood. He added: “If it starts going grey or falling out that livelihood is threatened.

“That is why you see very few female stars who dare to show their true hair colour if they are going grey. Similarly, male stars go to extraordinary lengths to cover their baldness with hair transplants, hair weaves and clever changes of style.”

Crown Clinic has seen a 25 percent rise in bookings in the past three years thanks to the Rooney effect – men copying the hair transplant of England captain Wayne Rooney. Dr Shahmalak’s celebrity clients include Embarrassing Bodies presenter Christian Jessen and the model Calum Best.
