Cape Town - Give your make-up routine a new lease on life this summer by injecting a splash of colour.

Go bold with lipstick hues of orange, purple, blue or pastel eyes. Whatever you do, remember that summer is the perfect time to experiment with new colours.

If you are not feeling playful, bold red lips have never gone out of style. No matter what year or season, a red lipsitck and smokey eyes are classic and will suit everyone when done right.

Makeup-artist Nabeelah Karbary, of makeup by nk, created four looks for a hot summer.

Nabeelah Karbary’s six top tips

* For summer I really want to emphasise that “less is more”. The key is to use products that are long-lasting, if not waterproof. Use a lightweight, long-lasting foundation, especially for those unbearably hot days when you want to prevent your make-up from running.

* Summer means outdoor festivals, braais and days at the beach, and protecting your skin from the sun is key. SPF is essential to keep your skin protected. My favourite is SOLAL SPF 30+, a sun protection facial cream that is suitable for all skin types. I also recommend using a foundation that already has SPF properties.

* Use a translucent powder on your T-zone to neutralise the shine and to get rid of any excess oils throughout the day, which will leave you with a healthy glow.

* I don’t often wear blush as my cheeks are already peachy and flustered as a result of the heat. For dimension and warmth to the face, I use a bonzer instead on the areas one would usually contour.

* MAC Fix+ is my absolute favourite product to use in summer to ensure that my skin stays hydrated throughout the day. A couple of sprays will not only leave your skin hydrated and cooled down, but also set your foundation, making it last longer.

* Keep it simple and fresh by applying a few coats of mascara and a bright lip colour. Don’t be afraid to choose colours that are daring and fun.
