London - A shampoo with an added steroid drug has been developed for treating psoriasis on the scalp, which is characterised by thick, scaly patches.

Nearly 200 people with scalp psoriasis are taking part in a one-month trial comparing the benefits of using a shampoo containing desoximetasone with a placebo shampoo.

Creams and gels with desoximetasone are often used to relieve redness and itching in a number of skin conditions, including psoriasis; the drug reduces inflammation, thought to cause the symptoms.

However, these products can be difficult to apply to the scalp.

The US company behind the treatment, Taro Pharmaceuticals, will also investigate how long patients should apply the shampoo for maximum benefits.
