London - It is a problem for countless women – buying a bra in the “right” size, only to find it uncomfortable and far from supportive.

One company says this is because it is not the size that matters, but the chest shape – of which, it says, there are seven.

According to lingerie firm ThirdLove, women who have breasts that point in the opposite direction have an ‘East West’ chest.

While those with a wide space between the breasts have a ‘Side Set’ and women who have one bigger than the other are ‘Asymmetric’.

Women with breasts the same size at the top and bottom are described as simply ‘Round’.

‘Bell Shape’ describes breasts that are thinner at the top and fuller at the bottom.

The final two are ‘Slender’, which refers to nipples that point down, and ‘Teardrop’, which is defined as: “Round but slightly less full at the top.”

Bras from US-based ThirdLove typically cost around £53 (about R1 000). It claims its range of bras goes far beyond the usual A-H cup range.

To find the right one, women take selfies on the ThirdLove app which matches them up with its database of bras. Users are given an image of what they would look like wearing the bra. The data is also used to help the firm develop better-sized bras.

ThirdLove says it has “empowered thousands of women to become better bra shoppers”.
