Who says brogues are for boys only?

Brogues by Rubi  trend forecaster Alba Martinez Hermida tells us why we need a pair and how to wear them.

1. Where did the brogue trend originate?

“You will have noticed the lines between male versus female fashion have slowly become blurred. Androgynous fashion is fast becoming a big ticket item. This trend arguably stems from that desire to have the freedom of deciding what we should and shouldn’t wear. Now men’s fashion is inspiring women’s fashion.”

2. What was the inspiration for the latest brogue trend?

“The brogue has made a massive comeback thanks to the move towards androgynous styling. Think Manrepeller. The brogue trend can be best described as the genderless era / boy meets girl styling. Rubi’s stylish and feminine designs come in a range of different colours to suit an array of different outfit options. Whether its date night, running errands, dinner with your parents or even brunch with the girlfriends, brogues are your trendy and comfortable alternative to every event.”

3. How would you recommend styling a pair of brogues?

“It’s the Instagram shoe of the moment, with influencers like Julie Sarinana (@sincerelyjules) styling back with jeans, skirts, shorts - nearly everything.

It’s all about balance

Always show off your ankle when you’re wearing brogues. Wear with above-the- knee skirts, dresses, footless tights, shorts or cropped pants, and you’ll get a good balance and sense of proportion in your outfit.

All jeans will work: Keep it nice, simple and stylish with jeans and brogues. They will go with basically every pair of jeans (even the coloured ones and skinny, bootcut and baggy). Have some fun but enjoy this easy combo. Pair with a blazer for chic, a bomber jacket for cool and winter coat and scarf for warmth.

Loving the tomboy look: Team with boyfriend blazers, jeans or denim skirt for flirty tomboy appeal.

Not so masculine: Balance the masculinity of the shoe with feminine touches. Inset dresses and skirts! Brogues are not just reserved for guy-inspired style, they also look amazing with girly outfits – the end result is the perfect blend of dapper to any dress or skirt.

Perfect for the day office-to- night drinks: Embrace your brogues and wear with tailored pants. This is a great look to take you from office, to drinks. Stylish and elegant, yet easy-to- wear and never overdressed, the brogues and pants combo is a must! Get your ankles out for an on-trend overall look!

4. Are there going to be different styles of brogues on offer at Rubi?

Yes absolutely. The Bailey Oxford and Austin True are our two key styles for March, supported by the Willa Woven. From gold glitter to luxe patent black… there is something for everyone, for every occasion.
